The Story Behind the Name: Danfe

The name Danfe comes from the majestic and beautiful bird unique to the Himalayas. These birds are commonly found soaring up the Himalayan sky at a range of 9000-15000 ft. It is also the national bird of Nepal. We source our finest loose-leaf teas from this beautiful country.

The Identity Crisis for Himalayas Teas from Nepal

Nepal is among the major producers of premium quality teas. Nepal has around 200 tea estates and with 70,000 people in the Nepali tea industry produce some of the finest loose-leaf teas. Grown at very high altitude and unique Himalayas climate, these teas have robust flavors and have naturally less astringency.

Despite this, Nepalese loose-leaf teas are relatively unknown to the world of tea lovers.

Nepalese Teas vs Darjeeling Teas

Due to a close proximity of Nepalese tea estates with Darjeeling, many Indian businesses import Nepalese tea in bulk at a lower price and tag it as Darjeeling, or mix it with the Darjeeling teas to export overseas. Most Nepalese tea arrives in the west labeled as teas of Indian origin, such as Darjeeling tea.

The Irony

It's ironic that Nepalese teas, despite having such potential, are relatively unknown to the world. Tea is one of the major exports of Nepal and it has been cultivated since 1863 AD.
