Why Altitude Matters

Grown Above
the Clouds

Danfe Tea's Himalayan teas grow at 3,000 to 7,000 feet above sea level in Nepal's Ilam and Jhapa districts — an elevation that forces tea plants to grow slower, concentrating flavor, aroma, and health compounds into every single leaf.

High-altitude cultivation triggers the tea plant's stress response. Thin air, UV radiation, and mineral-dense rocky soil cause the plant to produce 30–50% more antioxidants, catechins, and polyphenols compared to lowland teas. This is why Himalayan teas taste smoother, more complex, and naturally sweeter — without any additives.

Nepal now cultivates tea across 27,000 hectares and produces 23,745 metric tonnes annually (NTCDB). Ilam's misty mountain climate, fertile red loam soils, and centuries of orthodox farming tradition produce teas that rival Darjeeling — at significantly better value for US consumers.

Our Story

Danfe Tea: Championing
Nepal's Hidden Treasure

For decades, Nepal's most extraordinary teas slipped quietly across the border into India — blended into Darjeeling lots, sold at a premium, with Nepal receiving no credit and farmers a fraction of fair value.

"At higher elevations, tea plants face stress from thin air and UV radiation — triggering 30–50% richer production of antioxidants and flavor compounds. That's nature doing the work, not chemistry."
— Rupesh Poudel

Danfe Tea was founded to change this. Operating from Dallas, Texas, and available at the Dallas Farmers Market every Saturday & Sunday, Danfe sources exclusively from Nepal's high altitude gardens in Ilam and Jhapa.

The verified numbers are compelling: Nepal exports tea to over 35 countries, produces 23,745 metric tonnes annually across 27,000 hectares of cultivated land, and recorded Rs 3.94 billion (~$30M USD) in export revenue in FY 2022/23.

Our sourcing partner, Nepal Tea Exchange, ensures every leaf comes with full organic certification, fair trade farmer pricing, and complete traceability.

Perfect Your Cup

The Danfe Brew Guide

"We believe that your tea experience should be completely personal. Individual taste buds are unique and there is no right or wrong way to brew tea. Therefore we encourage tea lovers to not necessarily bind to traditional methods but let their experience, and discovery guide them. After all, that is where the joy of drinking tea lies. You should try different amounts of tea, steeping time, and water temperature to find the perfect taste you'll fall in love with."

— The Danfe Method

01
Orthodox Black Tea
195°F (90°C)
Steep 3–5 minutes
1 tsp per 8 oz

Water just off the boil. Add milk for a classic Himalayan chai or drink pure to experience the malt and honey notes of Ilam's high-altitude terroir.

→ Shop Black Teas
02
High-Altitude Green Tea
175°F (80°C)
Steep 2–3 minutes
1 tsp per 8 oz

Never boiling water — it destroys delicate EGCG and causes bitterness. Lower temp, sweeter, richer cup.

→ Shop Green Teas
03
Himalayan White Tea
185°F (85°C)
Steep 3–4 minutes
1.5 tsp per 8 oz

Handle with care — white tea buds are the tenderest leaves. Cold-brew for 6–8 hrs in the fridge for extraordinary natural sweetness.

→ Shop White Teas
04
Herbal & Floral Blends
200°F (93°C)
Steep 5–7 minutes
1.5 tsp per 8 oz

Caffeine-free herbal and floral teas can handle longer steep times for a bolder cup. Perfect for evenings.
